Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative

Founded in 2001 at UNEP on World Environment Day (June 5th), GeSI began as a pioneering effort to unite the ICT sector around climate action, digital inclusion, and responsible business.

Over the past two decades, GeSI has grown into a global, cross-industry platform spanning technology, telecoms, energy, transport, logistics, finance, manufacturing, and emerging digital and AI innovators, all committed to harnessing digital transformation for a sustainable and resilient future. GeSI has a long legacy of evidence-based leadership, from its landmark SMART reports — which demonstrated early how digital solutions and AI can drive system-wide impact across the SDGs — to its role in shaping major global standards, including ICT GHG Protocols, Scope 3 methodologies, and the European Green Digital Coalition’s net-impact framework.

Our vision is a world where digital technology and AI are designed and deployed responsibly to create meaningful social, economic, and environmental progress — improving quality of life while safeguarding the planet.

Our mission is to mobilise digital innovation —from data and cloud to AI, IoT, and emerging technologies — to solve global sustainability challenges.

We work with 100+ partners worldwide, including the United Nations, the European Union, global technology leaders, SMEs, research institutions, and multi-stakeholder alliances. Grounded in transparency, inclusiveness, and collaboration, GeSI continues to shape the future of responsible digital and AI transformation — enabling technology to serve people, prosperity, and the planet.
